Turkey: UN Country Team Update on Syrian Displacement 22 August 2012


Highlights;

• On August 22, 2012 the Government of Turkey announced officially that the total number of Syrians registered and accommodated in the camps and temporarily in the schools reached to 74,112 persons including those who are in the hospitals for medical treatment. This is 10% increase in the last three days since August 19, 2012.

• During the 24 hours of August 21-22, 2012, it is officially reported that 1,832 persons arrived and 37 persons returned voluntarily. According to the information from Ceylanpınar and Akçakale Camp officials about 868 persons returned voluntarily from two camps in Sanliurfa on August 21-22, 2012. Official numbers announced by the Government does not include the new arrivals of the last 24 hours of August 22-23, 2012 however local officials estimate that the unofficial figure is about 75,000.


• Reportedly the new arrivals are continued to be diverted to the cities where the accommodation can be provided in the boarding schools until the new camps are operational. As of August 22, 2012, 21% of the official total number is accommodated temporarily in seven cities. The last new arrivals were sent to Malatya.
