Turkey: UN Country Team Update on Syrian Displacement 30 September 2012


• According to information note of AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) shared by the MFARegional Representative in Kilis apart from the 13 operational camps, three more camps are under construction. Two camps of which one will be a container site are under construction in Gaziantep Nizip and another tent camp is under construction in Şanlıurfa next to the existing camp in Akçakale.

• Reportedly the fights between the oppositions and the Syrian Government forces is still on going across the border of Akçakale and more Syrians are crossing the border to Turkish side. According to the camp manager, the new arrivals are being registered in Akçakale camp but due to shortage of capacity in the camp those who claim to have relatives in in the villages are allowed to stay with their relatives.

• According to the Regional Representative of the MFA, the number of people waiting across the borders of Kilis and Hatay increased to approximately 14,000 people despite the admissions. Reportedly the borders are open and people are admitted gradually in smaller groups but the process is slow.


• There are no new official figures reported by the Government of Turkey since September 24, 2012. Local authorities (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MFA) informed that that as of early morning of October 1, 2012 the total number increased to 93,576. Reportedly during the 24 hours of September 30 - October 1, 277 new arrivals were admitted from the borders ad 57 Syrians have returned to Syria voluntarily.
