UN Country Team Update on Syrian Displacement 15 August 2012


Highlights:

• It was reported by the local authorities that due to the escalating sitution in Azaz and Aleppo, approximately 5,000 new arrivals crossed the border in the last 24 hours. While the official figures still shows 61,450 the authoritoes in Kilis informed that with the new arrivals of the last two days (approx: 8,500) the population of Syrians in Turkey reached close to 70,000 people.

• The authorities in Kilis informed UNHCR that upon decision by the Government of Turkey, Turkish Red Crescent had established warehouse tents at Kilis border and started to provide assistance to the new arrivals at the border until their admission process is completed while also sending humanitarian assistance to the needy people in the villages across the border as well as to Aleppo and Azaz districts through Syrian Red Crescent. It was also reported by the authorities that assistance across the border will have no effect on Turkish Government’s open border policy for those who wish to cross the border to seek temporary protection. 60.000

• Local authorities in Kilis informed UNHCR that about 3,000 of the last new arrvals crossed the border from Hatay and some 2,000 of them from Kilis border in the last 24 hours. Reportedly the vast majority of the new arrivals during the last two days were from Azaz and Aleppo while there were also some from Latakia and its surroundings new arrivals crossed the border in the last 24 hours. While the official figures still shows 61,450 the authoritoes in Kilis informed that with the new arrivals of the last two days (approx: 8,500) the population of Syrians in Turkey reached close to 70,000 people.
